Does Morality Need God?

Exploring Religion, Reason, and the Search for Objective Truth

Can we distinguish right from wrong without believing in God? This question concerns more than personal belief: it asks what makes our moral judgments justified.

In my latest video, I explore divine command theory (the view that moral obligations depend on God’s commands) and a classic challenge known as the Euthyphro dilemma: does God command something because it is good, or is it good because God commands it? The distinction raises difficult questions about the relationship between goodness and divine authority.

There is also the problem of interpretation. When believers draw conflicting moral conclusions from the same sacred text, how can we determine which interpretation reflects God’s will?

The video considers moral realism as a possible approach: the view that there are objective moral truths independent of our opinions. It asks how reasoning might help us discover them, while recognising that their existence and how we know them remain matters of philosophical debate.

Nietzsche’s The Joyous Science offers a related exploration of the challenges that arise when inherited religious foundations lose their authority. It is a starting point for further questioning, rather than a defence of the approach proposed here.

Ultimately, where our moral sense comes from and whether our moral judgments are justified are distinct questions. If that sense is understood as God-given or shaped by evolution, what difference should this make to how we evaluate right and wrong?
