Sue Trinder, an orphan raised by Mrs. Sucksby, a "baby farmer," grows up among petty thieves in a London slum. Gentleman, a con man, proposes that Sue become the maid to Maud Lilly to help him seduce her and share her inheritance. Sue agrees, hoping to repay her adopted family, but begins to care for Maud. In this tale of twists, nothing is as it seems.
